At Partners 4 Recovery, we are dedicated to empowering families in crisis and strengthening communities across Michigan. Our mission is to raise funds for advocacy programs and deliver education that prevents substance use disorders, promotes recovery awareness, and builds lasting connections between individuals, families, and local organizations.
Partners 4 Recovery (Partners) was started in 2018 because of a need for helping Genesee County Sobriety Court participants. Court participants were comprised of community members who had substance use disorders. Bob McKamie, upon his retirement from General Motors, was asked to join the Genesee County Sobriety court team headed by Judge Vikki Bayeh Haley. Bob was the community liaison. Court participants were mandated to do urinalysis 2- 3x per week, purchase bus passes if needed, pay for a breathalyzer when eligible. They were also mandated to go to support group meetings on a regular basis. Many of the participants weren’t able to maximize their focus on recovery because they were always trying to work overtime to pay for all their court obligations. Bob asked the judge if he could leave the team and start a non-profit to help court members. He contacted Mike McCarty a long-time recovery member and they put together a board, applied for a Tax Id number and then a 501c3. Partners4Recovery was borne.
Partners wrote grants, did fund raisers and reached out to community leaders to help in their efforts. The board wanted to be able to put on events for the court participants to attend so they could learn how to have sober fun for themselves and their families. Partners organized and put on softball tournaments, cornhole tournaments, card games, tailgate parties and magic shows. They collaborated with several local treatment centers, UAW locals and recovering people from all over Genesee County, MI. to make this happen. Members of the board were all in recovery so they announced activities at local support group meetings to keep the drive alive. Many of these events were family events in which the entire family could participate and have fun. Our fund raising has enabled Partners to donate over $28,000 Sobriety Court members or drug test vouchers and bus passes. We have also donated funds to local recovery organizations as well as helped at food banks and soup kitchens. Partners give back for selfish reasons, “It makes us feel good.”
We strive to help people with all substance use disorders and Partners visits local treatment centers, court meetings, senior citizens groups and recovery group functions to do presentations on the value of recovery. They developed presentations such as “How Addiction Impacts the Family” and did this in front of recovering people, their families and local business leaders to show that you can have fun in recovery. and that the whole family is impacted because of substance use disorders. We have been going strong ever since.
